When designing a plastic products, the product designers must consider the wall thickness. Some manufacturers will tell you that they can only produce injection mold parts with uniform wall thickness. While this can make manufacturing parts easier, it is not part of the overall process. However, different wall thicknesses do lead to more difficult processes. This is because during the cooling process: the cooling and solidification of the thick-walled area is slower than the thin-walled area. Coupled with the shrinkage factor during cooling, this means that improperly designed molds and products can be affected by uncooled, still liquefied material that may run where they should not be placed.
This potential problem is managed by considering manufacturability when designing components. For example, a thicker area can be located at a lower portion of the mold so that gravity can help hold the material that is still in a cool state at its location. Questions?
