FAQs about offshore project operation:
Many companies encounter a lot of problems in considering offshore manufacturing of products for the customer. For years of practice, First-rate Mold Solution Co. Ltd finds a feasible solution that is not only realizable and safe but also brings extra value to the customers.
Following are problems and solutions that are normally involved in offshore manufacturing:
a) What kinds of parts and steels are used in overseas mold manufacturing?
First-rate Mold Solution Co. Ltd purchases mold parts and steels fully according to the customers’ requirements for use; however, the standard for use ensuring safe use should apply, on the condition that the customers’ requirements for safe domestic use of mold are met.
b) Can overseas mold be manufactured according to customers’ special standard?
With years of experience in delivering services to overseas customers, First-rate Mold Solution Co. Ltd is fully capable of making mold according to customers’ standard. We’re fast and good in understanding even peculiar mold manufacturing standard.
c) Is it difficult to communicate with overseas customers?
First-rate Mold Solution Co. Ltd has an excellent project management group and design team. They’re richly experienced, abundant in professional knowledge and proficient skill in speaking and writing in foreign languages. They’re able to communicate with overseas customers via email and telephone on our online platform. Our project engineers will update project progress on our website, so that overseas customers may understand the situation on a real-time basis.
d)Term of payment and transportation confirmation with regard to overseas mold project
All overseas mold projects are subject to 3-4-3 term of payment, i.e., 30% advance payment before running the project, 40% payment after delivery of qualified sample after primary tooling test, and 30% arrearage payment before mold transportation. First-rate Mold Solution Co. Ltd rejects any transportation of mold with arrearage.
Before mold transportation, mold engineer in charge of the project and project engineer must make step-by-step inspection of the mold according to the customer’s requirements. Only the mold fully meets the customer’s requirements is allowed to pack.
e)Are all the design data of overseas customers applicably integrated in our design system?
The design system of First-rate Mold Solution Co. Ltd can fully be compliance with the customers’ requirements for opening of design data and ensure accurate recovery, to the extent to eliminate potential troubles for subsequent process.
f) Assurance of mold service lifetime:
All the molds produced by First-rate Mold Solution Co. Ltd must be ensured to meet the customers’ requirements for use, and we guarantee that such molds are free from any defect as long as they’re properly used.
Injection molds are subject to thousands of pounds of pressure every cycle. As a result, the molds must be made from very strong materials that can withstand repeated use without deforming. The most common choice for injection molds is steel, with the grade of steel determined by the number of parts to be produced and the material to be injected into the mold. (For example, a fiberglass filled material causes a lot of wear when injected, so the mold would need to be made from a higher grade of steel.)
Another factor that determines injection mold costs is the complexity of the part to be produced. The more complex your part, the more complex and costly the mold. And once made, molds are difficult and many times impossible to modify, removing your ability to modify the design.
Plastic manufacturing is one of China’s industry strengths. The country has always emerged as a leader all over the world when it comes to producing top quality plastics. Because of this fact, it is safe to say they are an elite country when it comes to injection mold manufacturing. They have the right personnel equipped with top level skills and knowledge to perform injection molding.
If you happen to be one of those plastic manufacturers having problems with injection molding, you should start thinking about outsourcing injection molding in China for your own benefit. In-house injection molding can be costly and could lead to a lot of issues in your operations which is why outsourcing injection molding in China makes perfect sense.
Currently, there is a diversity of mold manufacturers available in the China market, including foreign-funded companies, Taiwan invested firms, Hong Kong enterprises, and domestic ones. The pros and cons comparison between each type of mold makers are stated as below:
Foreign-funded mold manufacturers are characterized by standardized management, robust processes, strong service awareness, as well as assured quality and service, but their overhead costs and selling expenses are pretty high, meaning that mold development charge will be accordingly higher. If you have a strong financial capacity and would like to seek a company that is able to provide assured product quality, a large size foreign-funded mold manufacturer will be your choice of cooperator! However, in practice, large sized foreign-funded companies often have regular clients, so their prices will often be in line with the international market, which is not easy for many enterprises to accept. A set of large precision automotive mold usually costs hundreds of thousands or even millions dollar – the direct cause that discourages many buyers.
Chinese privately owned mold manufacturers are mostly established by the first batch foreign enterprise employees who first accessed the mold industry. Dubbed up-and-coming stars, one of the biggest inherent advantages of such enterprises is the relatively low material, overhead and selling costs. The mold and product prices they offer are definitely lower than those of foreign, Taiwan and Hong Kong mold manufacturer, so they are always able to attract the attention of a large number of mold buyers.
If you have a limited budget or have no established connections in China, going out and “finding” that China injection mold makers are very costly (China visitations, interviewing shops, etc.) and if you just arbitrarily choose one, you may end up with a junk injection mold that then begs the question: where you really any further ahead seeking out a direct mold factory or would you have been better off to go to a domestic service provider that handles injection mold design, quality control, logistics, and any necessary domestic tuning?
If you plan to make molds outside of the United States, and you don’t have an international patent. Remember you have no legal means of stopping someone in China from building a second set of injection molds and producing your product and selling it in say Australia, Japan or Europe, quite possibly before you roll it out in the United States.
A lot of problems come from communication and working habits from my experience actually. Many injection mold manufacturers in China can’t speak and listen English very well, it may be the biggest reason of causing some problems. If communication no problem, Chinese manufacturers are very much willing to do everything possible for their customers
Mold making in China, is the process of making molds for plastic injection molding manufacturing. Mold makers not only offer services for designing and making these molds but also perform other tasks necessary to help them perform well.
While the exact list of services mold makers offer varies from company to company, they generally offer support and modification tasks. This includes operating, monitoring, and repairing mold machines, testing molds to ensure they meet client specifications, modifying molds to fit client specifications, and quality control for finished products. Essentially, choosing to do your mold making in China not only gets you a mold but also assists you at every stage of production.
If your company requires plastic injection molding services to create a plastic part, one of the first—and most critical—decisions to make is whether you’re going to go with a plastic injection mold service in the U.S. or one based overseas. While many countries offer mold-making services, China is the primary player in this market.
Your company might be leaning toward China because their plastic injection molding services are generally low-cost—you’ll likely save between 20-60% with a injection mold made in China. You may also achieve faster results.
But in order to benefit from those low costs and fast results, a number of factors would need to be in place so the quality of your injection mold doesn’t suffer:
You’d need first-rate engineering support. Without it, you could end up with a mold that has to be thrown away or completely retooled. Can you find such services in China? Possibly you’ll need to vet the companies you consider very closely. but a company like First-rate mold solution company can help you a lot, I recommend it
This well known principle states that 80% of the consequences stem from 20% of the causes. In manufacturing, it often happens that 80% of the profits come from 20% of the customers. This should tell you to spend 80% of your time and energy on that 20%, but it usually never happens. Too much time and money are spent on work with little or even no profit. These kinds of distractions cost a great deal of money and are often a source of frustration. There are better ways to reduce mold making costs. Most custom mold makers found out long ago that their time was better spent doing precision core and cavity work, instead of building mold bases, for example. Similarly, your time may be better spent developing new products, or engineering improvements to your existing product line. Perhaps too much time is spent manufacturing items that could be more effectively made in an offshore facility. The distractions of these non-core aspects of your business can drain precious resources and thus take away from your main area of expertise.
Offshore Outsourcing Benefits
Smart companies do what they do best an leave the rest for somebody else. Not everything has to be done “in house”.
When there are many miles between you and your mold builder, consider the following five approaches to ensure the mold is built on time, on budget and at the quality the project deserves.
Present clear mold expectations. Provide thorough specifications as you’ll be working with a translator who will need to relay the requirements to the tool-building team. Well-defined instructions will help them do their job accurately from day one. Any ambiguity will necessitate clarifying questions that can start eroding the timeline because of the need to go back and forth via email. With at least a 12 hour difference between the United States and China, that can amount to a lot of lost time over small details.
Have experienced mold engineers on your team. The mold builder will provide the proposed tool design to the tool engineer for review, which is usually located in the U.S. If that person doesn’t understand critical mold components, such as the overall mold flow, the proper amount of cooling and the gate location, the ramifications to the mold (or part) downstream can be substantial. A qualified engineer needs to be able to review the design, mark the problem areas and send the design back to China for a second pass to ensure the tool is robust. Included in this review should be a thorough audit of the proposed mold material.
Stay on top of timeline check-ins. As key milestones arise, review the updates thoroughly and ask questions if something doesn’t seem right. Working with a team abroad means you’re relying on emails, software renderings and pictures for those checkpoints. For example, during a review of the completed mold, make sure you’re getting images across a range of angles and lighting to ensure you can conduct an accurate assessment and provide specific, actionable feedback. Flagging miscues as you go makes it easier to fix them before the build gets too far along.
Prepare for first-run samples. Be very clear as to what the expectation is for the first sample, including the number of required parts and the dimensional inspections for review. To help conduct a thorough analysis of the first run, ask for the moldmaker’s record of the molding process and equipment. And, request a video that shows the parts ejecting from the mold and the total molding cycle. Without appropriate documentation, both written and visual, it can be easy to misrepresent cycle times or the quality of the parts.
Understand measurement methods for part qualification. To ensure you understand how the moldmaker is conducting its measurements, ask to have their CMM measurement methods, including pictures of the part setup and the programs. These items will allow you to compare their methodology and confirm the parts are meeting standards. If the part is misaligned, measurement results are most likely incorrect, which will lead to incorrect decisions on mold adjustments.
A well-made part starts with a well-made tool. For a myriad of reasons, shops are working with foreign makers. The best ways to help ensure a robust mold are to provide clear expectations and conduct comprehensive reviews throughout the moldmaking process
I strongly recommend that you should find a qualified partner in China to help you source molds,This partner needs to have rich experience in mold design and manufacturing, and be familiar with European and American mold design and manufacturing standards, but cannot be a manufacturer, because:
to source a mold in China involves managing and dealing with the potential compromises that are an everyday fact of life in the Chinese market.
First, our experience suggests that mold design takes longer in China than it does here. When we source a mold in China, we always need to revise mold designs, sometimes several times until it’s correct.
Second, while mold construction is significantly faster in the Chinese shops we work with, we just about always find that, upon inspection, we need at least some rework to be done, and we will always conduct an initial mold trial prior, where we then tear the mold down for inspection and then always conduct an additional mold trial to make sure the mold is right before it goes to the customer.
In both of these areas—design and build—we can trace the additional time needed due to manpower issues and practices. The simple fact is that the value of a competent individual employee isn’t recognized in China the same way it is here. Turnover is rampant, as workers come to urban areas in search of jobs and money and then leave those same urban areas and return to their rural home cities and towns when they’ve saved up enough money.
Our Chinese partners spend significant time and energy training and retraining a transient workforce. A factory worker in China remains an easily replaceable commodity. Our experience tells us that it’s rare to find a senior Chinese moldmaker in the workforce with more than five years of experience. The North American moldmakers we compete with, like us, all boast senior, highly skilled work forces, with experience levels three to five times what we normally find in China.
Many successful custom manufacturers of molded plastic products began with an innovative design or a new invention. Naturally, they kept the secret to themselves and produced their new product entirely in-house.
Later, with patents in place and a growing customer base, they found that their R&D suffered. Too much was going into the wrong areas and that spirit of invention and creativity was losing out to the day-to-day operations.
Initially, it might be painful to send work to an offshore supplier, in the long run it often benefits for the entire company and it’s employees. True, this “shedding” process is temporarily disruptive, but when properly managed has positive effects.
Often, an unexpected side effect of offshore outsourcing is the new exposure to different ideas and ways of doing things. This can lead to new areas of R. Now, with a more agile company and engineering department, these ideas can be developed with fewer distractions. The international marketplace is growing exponentially and new products are constantly being introduced in previously untapped markets.
This represents a huge opportunity for custom manufacturer’s who are in a position to develop and market new products. The Brookings Institute has an informative paper on the regulations surrounding offshore outsourcing.
Outsourcing helps to expand into new markets
It often happens that new opportunities present themselves as companies venture into the unknown of offshore outsourcing. Several major injection molders took steps to be in a position to benefit from the global economy by making alliances with foreign companies.
It took quite a bit of doing, but the floodgates opened for them and work just keeps coming.
Some global companies require an offshore presence in order to even do business with them. The world is the marketplace and boundaries are quickly disappearing.
Plastic injection molders who lack in house tool building experience typically are not aware of the complexities, materials and technologies that are required to build a quality injection mold. As stated above by the others, tooling is essential in making quality parts. Every project is different and has to be handled by the basic part requirements.
Specialized parts can require specialized injection mold makers. For example you would not want a tool house that builds hardware to be manufacturing injection molds for medical components. The skill levels and machinery are very different. This means you will need to have a variety of injection mold making partners that you can market.
When it comes to the design and manufacturing of your injection molding tool and the subsequent parts, where should you have them made? While many companies get their molds designed in the US, some companies then use offshore tooling to have their molds made outside the US, typically in China. While this makes sense if you’re planning on manufacturing there, the recent trade war has made many companies rethink about the perks of local manufacturing.
The foreign outsource manufacturer has produced a series of molds for a product for its foreign buyer. Now that the product has become commercially successful, we often see the following three basic problems arise:
The foreign product manufacturer announces a substantial increase in the price of the product. This is often a surprise to the foreign buyer, who had expected the per unit price of the product to go down as production increased.
The foreign outsource product manufacturer is not able to keep up with increased production requirements. This is often a surprise to the foreign buyer, who had been assured by the foreign manufacturer that it had ample capacity for any scale of orders.
The stress of increased production demand causes the quality level from the foreign manufacturer to progressively decline, reaching unacceptable levels. This is often a surprise to the product buyer, who had expected quality to improve over time.
